So quiet on Laura Street on a rainy holiday morning

So quiet on Laura Street on a rainy holiday morning
quiet in an apartment without television,
without the wife on the phone, yelling at cats,
the street noise, the scooters and motorcycles
the hum of the Caterpillar tractor in the quarry
so quiet on Laura Street in Beaver, Pennsylvania

Here comes the chilly autumn breeze, cover up,
windows closed, baseball season playoffs,
green leaves turning brittle on the trees,
harvesting vegetables, auto inspection, soup in the kitchen,
a loneliness only love can comfort,
only love, only love can hug me sensibly,
prepare the warmth only love can heat

feel the darkness before morning
the Beaver chill coating the bed sheets.
from opened screened window
the full moon says:
autumn is only weeks away, travel before Halloween,
or turn into a pumpkin
all of you who I love in the valley
hundreds of children trick or treat,
leaves turned gold and orange in curbside heaps

The air con done for the season,
follows the moon with lengthened nights
temperatures dropping in the Ohio River
onto the Mississippi and Gulf of Mexico,
impressing the memory with palm trees and soft breezes

Here it comes, the longest part of the year,
naturally in Pittsburgh, yinz all are
feeling free from attachments
all that matter at three in the night

on the quietest street in this one court town
Should I drink the milk spilled from the cows
that jumped over the harvest moon.
sleep with dreams of fund-raising fantasy radio,
mantra, breeze shaking the stiffening leaves
blocking morning sunlight behind breeze shaken trees
leaves slapping high fives with every gust,

underneath, morning light almost here
a freight train by the riverside passes
excited the fog with clever hoots
as crows loudly squawk above
squirrels, alarmed, chirp madly in trees
clinging to dear life

Here the chilly autumn stays
Closing the Moraine Arthur kayaking lake
till after frigid winter makes itself at home.
No matter what this tropical boy says
when love kicks in one day,
makes itself apparent,
it will feel like a comfortable blanket
